make these once and you’ll never buy another bagel I swear.
This homemade Blueberry Bagels Recipe is so dreamy I’m at a loss for words.
Except I’m not. I have many words. They’re delicious. They’re dreamy. They’re chewy and soft. They’re beautifully golden and just plain gorgeous. They are everything I want a bagel to be, plus…
They’re bursting with sweet blueberry flavour and loaded with creamy white chocolate. Blueberries and white chocolate are a flavour match made in heaven.

Every time I make homemade bagels I start to question my life choices.
Like why, why would I ever buy bagels again? Why? They are surprisingly easy to make and while yes, you do have to wait a bit for them to rise, you’ll be making them on a weekend morning while everyone is sleeping and you can take this time to fully enjoy your morning coffee undisturbed. Maybe while catching up on your trashy television. Self care is important friends.
My family devoured this whole batch pretty quickly and I know yours will too. If you want to make them ahead of time or if you want to eat remaining bagels the next day, just slice them and lightly toast them before serving.

Blueberry Bagels Recipe – with White Chocolate
Ingredients
- 1 1/4 cups water warm not hot
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 Tbsp active dry yeast
- 3 1/2 cups flour
- 1/4 cup honey
- 1 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 cup fresh blueberries
- 1/2 cup white chocolate chips
- 1/4 cup brown sugar or honey
- Egg wash 1 egg white with 1 Tbsp water
Instructions
- Pour the water into the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the dough hook. Mix in the sugar, then the yeast. Stir well and let sit for several minutes, until foamy.
- Add the flour, salt and honey.
- Mix and allow to knead for about 5 minutes until dough is smooth.
- Fold in the blueberries and the white chocolate chips. I add them in and use floured hands to knead them into the dough. If they release a lot of juice and the dough seems really wet, add in another Tbsp or two of flour.
- Cover and allow to rise for 45-50 minutes.
- When the dough is ready, punch it down and divide into 8 pieces. Shape each piece into a ball. Place the dough balls on a parchment lined baking sheet, cover with a tea towel and allow to rest again for about 15-20 minutes.
- While they rest, heat the oven to 425.
- Bring a large pot of water to boil and add in the brown sugar.
- Uncover the dough. Press your thumbs through the center of each dough ball to create a hole about 1 inch in diameter.
- Boil the bagels, a few at a time, for about a minute on each side. Remove and place back on the baking sheet.
- Brush with egg wash.
- Bake for 15-20 minutes.

blueberry bagels Recipe ingredients, tips, substitutions:
Flour – you can use all purpose flour or bread flour interchangeably.
Blueberries – fresh blueberries are best, but if you can’t get your hands on some good ones you can use frozen blueberries, but thaw them first. You can also use dried blueberries, but the results will be quite different… I’d also soak them in hot water for a bit first to plump them up. If you can get your hands on some freeze dried blueberries you can add a bit in to the the bagel dough for a gorgeous colour.
Yeast – use active dry yeast. Using instant yeast will produce different results.
White Chocolate – I absolutely adore the combination of blueberries and white chocolate and so I could not resist adding some into this recipe. Believe me, it works.
Honey – I use good old runny honey in these bagels, but you can substitute sugar or brown sugar if you prefer.
Blueberry Bagels Recipe Variations:
Chocolate Blueberry Version – omit the white chocolate chips and sub in dark chocolate chips.
Blueberry Almond Version – blueberries and almonds are also a flavour match made in heaven. Add in a dash of almond extract and a handful of flaked almonds.
Cream Cheese Drizzle Version – once the bagels have cooled, mix together 1/2 cup soft cream cheese, 1/4 cup soft butter, 1 cup powdered sugar, 1-2 Tbsp milk and a splash of vanilla. Drizzle over the bagels.

blueberry bagels recipe, how to make it…
I usually like to use my stand mixer fitted with the dough attachment, but sometimes it’s nice to make these by hand and knead out all my frustrations. I also count this as my workout for the day.
To make the bagel dough start by proofing the yeast with a little sugar and warm water. Then add in the flour, salt and honey. Allow the dough hook to do its work and knead the dough for 5-6 minutes until it’s smooth.
Next we’ll fold in the blueberries and the white chocolate chips. I add them into the bowl and then use floured hands to knead them into the dough. If your berries are particularly plump and they release a lot of juice and the dough seems really wet, add in another Tbsp or two of flour so the dough is workable and not sloppy. Cover the bowl now and allow the dough to sit and rise for about 45 minutes.
Punch down the dough, divide it into 8 equal pieces and form those pieces into balls. Lay the dough balls on a large baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover them with a tea towel and allow them to rise again for about 15 minutes. Form each ball into a bagel shape with about a one inch hole in the center.
Bring a large pot of water to a boil and stir in some brown sugar. Boil the bagels for about a minute on each side and return them to the baking sheet. Brush with egg wash and bake for 15-20 minutes until perfectly golden brown and gorgeous.
Serve your amazing homemade blueberry bagels warm with butter or cream cheese.
