Savoury Baked Beans Recipe

Joss’s Green Chile & Beer Savoury Baked Beans

My girl and I created this savoury baked beans recipe together last year when I was making ribs for some guests and I needed a vegetarian dish for her and planned on making some homemade baked beans. That was the moment I found out that she thinks sweet baked beans are gross. Who knew?

Soooooooo… I asked for her help and we came up with these together. They were a huge hit then, and now we’ve perfected our recipe and made them even better. They’re spicy and incredibly flavourful and they make such a good bbq side option without all the sweet… which made us appreciate the giant skillet cookie for dessert even more.

Recipe-ish:

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup finely diced onion
  • 2 minced garlic cloves
  • 4 Tbsp butter, divided
  • 1/4 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • Pinch cayenne
  • 3/4 cup dark beer
  • 1 can green chiles
  • 1 Tbsp green hot sauce
  • 1/2 cup vegetable broth
  • 1 can black beans (rinsed & drained)
  • 1 can navy beans (rinsed & drained)
  • Juice of 1/2 a lime
  • To serve:
  • Cilantro, crumbled feta, hot sauce

Directions

  1. In a 10″ cast iron skillet sauté the onion and garlic in the butter until soft.

  2. Add in the smoked paprika, cumin, cayenne, beer, chiles, hot sauce and vegetable broth.

  3. Stir and let the mixture simmer for a couple of minutes.

  4. Add in the beans and some S&P.

  5. Let cook together for about 5 minutes.

  6. Stir in the juice of half a lime and 2 Tbsp butter.

  7. Place the skillet in the oven at 350 for about half an hour.

  8. Serve with cilantro, crumbled feta and hot sauce.
